Join Molly Reeder and Brennan Johnson for a one-day workshop celebrating the changing of seasons in the Warm Springs Valley of Virginia.
Modeling our own work on the spring energetics of Appalachian plants–pushing out from their winter fortifications, unfurling towards the light, adding vibrancy back into the mountainsides–we’ll be gathering together at Oakley Farm (makers of Troddenvale cider) for a day of cooking, community, and creative expression.
Brennan will lead the group in a morning of floral cooking and design. We’ll discuss ways to derive the flavor of flowers in culinary applications through drying, infusions, and more, and we’ll use fresh flowers to make tarts that participants can enjoy with their lunch or take home with them. In addition, we’ll make bouquets together to practice basic flower arrangement.
The afternoon will be devoted to watercolor painting. Molly will lead us in our painting sessions as we learn about her approach to painting, with a particular focus on mindfulness, ritual, and awareness within the process. Our painting subject matter will be the bouquets we have made that morning and/or the tarts we have composed.
We hope to inspire continued creative practices for participants in this one-day workshop, and offer students an opportunity for community and collaboration as we all rise up after a long winter. A nourishing lunch and dessert pairing (sourced with local ingredients) will be provided on-site for participants by a partnered chef of Troddenvale, and a glass of cider is included in the price of the ticket.
You will get to take home your foraged arrangement, assembled tart + watercolor painting.
*2 scholarships are available for this workshop! We are asking around $100 per ticket for these. Please send us an email at brennan@walnutschoolhouse.com and molly.reeder@gmail.com if you are interested, and include a paragraph about your interest in the workshop. There will be no questions on our end asking you to explain your financial situation or justify your need for a scholarship–we just want to hear why you are interested and what you hope to learn!
